Tabidachi: A Death Workshop

Tabidachi: A Death Workshop

Rev. Jotetsu Nemoto
Rinzai Zen Monk
Abbot of Daizen-ji Temple, Gifu, Japan

In the late 1990s, Japan faced a silent epidemic of suicide, with over 400,000 lives lost in just 13 years. Amid this crisis, a young Zen monk emerged from a six-year hermitage to support those on the brink of despair. Using insights from intensive Zen practice, he connected with the lost and suicidal, developing a groundbreaking workshop called Tabidachi (The Departure).

This unique experience simulates the process of letting go—of possessions, relationships, and identity—mirroring the stages of terminal illness. Originally designed to aid the suicidal, The Departure has proven transformative for anyone seeking to confront grief, explore the meaning of life, and embrace a deeper sense of purpose.

Recognizing that we all live across a spectrum of mental illness, as the Buddha described with dukkha, this workshop is for everyone. It offers a safe space to reflect on life’s challenges, embrace moments of connection and joy, and gain new perspectives on how we wish to live.

Join us as comrades in dukkha to discover clarity, resilience, and hope.

Max 25 participants.

🇯🇵 This workshop will be conducted in Japanese with translation to Thai and English.
